New York Times: Many Older Adults Lack Simple, Helpful Equipment
Falls are the leading cause of hospitalization and disability for older adults, but many falls are preventable. A new study in the JAMA Internal Medicine estimates there are 12 million older Americans who would benefit from simple, inexpensive upgrades in their homes to help them safely bathe and use the toilet, and over five million who don’t have access to any equipment that could help them.
Older adults want to stay in their homes, and providing these solutions can help them do it. Through our CAPABLE program (Community Aging in Place — Advancing Better Living for Elders) Colorado VNA provides participants up to 10 visits with a nurse and occupational therapist to identify what they need to live independently and safely.
