“It’s Thursday, I’m homebound, in a wheelchair, and I don’t have any food for the weekend. What am I going to do?”
Most of us do not have to contemplate not eating for over 48 hours, but this was the reality facing Bill, a VNA patient, quadriplegic and Vietnam Vet from Kiowa, Colo. After a seven-month stay in a nursing home in New Mexico last year, Bill was delivered to his home and quickly realized he had no food in the house. Bill, who has no family in the area, called the only person he thought could help him–his dedicated VNA caregiver, Debra.
“Bill truly was concerned about having enough to eat over the weekend. He is usually so calm and collected, but I could tell from the tone of his voice that he was worried, particularly since Bill has no friends or family in the area to whom he can go for help. When I told Bill that VNA’s Heart of Caring fund could provide the assistance he needed, I could hear his noticeable relief over the phone.”
The Visiting Nurse Association’s Heart of Caring fund is a resource that is accessed by VNA caregivers for our most needy patients, like Bill, who do not have family or the financial means to provide for themselves in times of need or emergencies. Heart of Caring provides VNA patients with everyday provisions–like food–that most of us take for granted. For the VNA patients who receive help, the supplies have an immediate and positive impact on their lives.
